Since 2019, I have developed a strong passion for custom mechanical keyboards. A key aspect of this customization involves replacing standard keycaps with unique artisan designs. Through extensive research, I learned how to create my own artisan keycaps, acquiring valuable skills in the process. By applying 3D modeling and printing techniques, I can now bring nearly any design concept to life. I invite you to take a look at this cosmonaut artisan keycap I created!
I learned various 3D sculpting and modeling techniques to create this cosmonaut concept for an artisan keycap. Blender and Nomad Sclupt were powerful, yet accessible tools in this process.
I selected SLA resin 3D printing as the method to realize my 3D model design. This approach provides superior resolution and a smooth finish compared to FDM 3D printing alternatives. Consequently, it ensures a high-quality print that minimizes the effort required to create a master keycap for casting.
I took the master keycap print to the mold making step. A quick-setting silicone mix was poured around the master to make the mold that can be used later to make resin copies.
A crystal clear two-part epoxy resin was mixed and tinted. Carefully poured the mixure into the silicone mold produced desired copies of the keycap.
Here is the first final product produced of the Kwamatics Cosmonaut artisan keycap.
